I’ve been battling some chronic pain with the ankylosing spondylitis flaring, so it was a particular treat to get emails from the gorgeous Wild Roof Journal and Thimble Literary Magazine that they’ve accepted my work! Wild Roof will include my poem “Lament of an Islander too Long Gone” in their 2026 winter issue, and Thimble‘s fall 2025 issue will include my poem “Self-Portrait as Bearded Vulture Chick.”
Both of these poems were gut-punches to write. “Lament” is a meditation on how I fear the ocean far more as an adult in ways I never did as a child, even though I was in the ocean and far more apt to be harmed in and by it in my youth. “Self-Portrait” starts with describing the obligate siblicide of some bird species–it saddens me now that I was not kind to my siblings in our childhood, for reasons that had little to do with them. I’m glad both of these pieces found homes. That they will appear in literary magazines that I personally consider the cream of the crop is something I will treasure!
